Baltimore Athenians Centennial Celebration

IN 1924, cab was A STAR BASKETBALL PLAYER for Frederick Douglass high school in Baltimore, Maryland. HE HAD JUST STARTED TO TAKE MUSIC SERIOUSLY and began performing locally. Legend has it that the Athenians needed a substitute player for a home game against the big five of howard university. Cab was already performing at the dance after the game with local bandleader ike Dixon’S SOCIETY ORCHESTRA. IT WAS CAB’S FIRST SHOW ADVERTISEMENT IN A MAJOR NEWSPAPER. the Athenians coach duck Gibson was also the coach of Frederick douglass’ BASKETBALL team and asked cab to play in the game for the Athenians. The ATHENIANS DEFEATED THE HOWARD TEAM AND CAB PERFORMED AT THE DANCE AFTERWARDS, CELEBRATED AS A HOMETOWN HERO.
